How much does it cost?

Tana Outliner has three different plans:

  • Free. Flexible, personal notes for casual task and knowledge management. This plan does not include AI features.
  • Plus, $8/month. The next-gen of AI-powered notetaking that helps you stay on top of things. Get the power of connected notes, an all-in-one workspace, and AI functionality like meeting notetakers and voice transcripts.
  • Pro, $14/month. Build powerful custom workflows with voice, AI, and commands.

To get early access you need to sign up for the Plus or Pro trial, but you can cancel anytime and will get the free version.

Is there a free trial or a demo?

Absolutely. You get a 14-day free trial of our paid plans so you can experience the full power of Tana Outliner, no strings attached. Starting a trial currently requires a credit card, and gives AI credits to test the powerful AI features in the app. You can easily cancel anytime during the trial and no charge will be made.

How does Tana Outliner Free compare to Plus and Pro?

Free is designed for casual use and trying out AI features in Tana Outliner. Plus and Pro unlock the full power of the app with enough AI credits for recording meetings regularly, Google Calendar sync, publishing with password protection, unlimited workspaces, command nodes, and integrations like Readwise, and advanced AI model selection. How much AI is included in Tana Outliner's subscription plans?

The Pro (previously "Core") plan includes 5000 credits each month. 5000 credits can get you one of the following:

  • 22 x 30 min meetings with the meeting agent
  • 125 images generated
  • 570 blog posts generated from transcripts
  • 25 hours of live voice transcriptions

The Plus plan includes 2000 credits each month. 2000 credits can get you one of the following:

  • 8 x 30 minute meetings with the meeting agent
  • 50 images generated
  • 220 blog posts generated from transcripts
  • 10 hours of live voice transcriptions

If you run out of credits you can easily add more through Settings > Manage your Account.

Tana Outliner Free includes 500 AI credits, equivalent to:

  • 100 min meetings
  • 12 images generated
  • 57 blog posts generated
  • 106 minutes of voice transcription

Can I buy extra AI credits on Tana Outliner Free?

No, Free plan users cannot top up AI credits. To access more credits and remove usage limits, you'll need to upgrade to a paid plan.

What happens if I run out of AI credits?

When you are approaching your credit limit or have reached it, you'll see a warning message popup inside Tana Outliner on desktop. This will link to the upgrade flow, so you can start a trial or upgrade to a paid plan to continue using AI.

If you are out of credits and try to record a mobile voice memo, you will see a warning message in the recorder. You can continue recording the voice memo, and it will be stored as an audio file. You can then top up your AI credits to process it.

How to buy more credits: You can easily top up by going to your account settings and choosing "Manage your plan" (only available on desktop). If you are on Tana Outliner Free you will have to upgrade to a paid plan to buy top-up AI credits. Top-up credits are valid for 12 months, and will only be used when you don't have any monthly credits left.

What happens if I downgrade to the free plan?

If you downgrade to Free, you can continue to take notes in Tana Outliner and work with your existing notes. The Free plan has a monthly limit of 500 AI credits, which you can use for AI chat and transcription. After these are used, you won't be able to use AI in the app unless you upgrade to a paid plan.

When your subscription period or trial ends, integrations like Google Calendar won't pull in data anymore and you will not be able to use paid features like password-protection on Published pages (setting new passwords), selecting model in AI chat, or creating new command nodes.

On Free, you'll be able to use all the powerful editor features of Tana Outliner like supertags, search nodes, and more. For people who casually use the app, or are temporarily using it with others, this plan may be sufficient.

How can I change to another plan?

You can change your plan by going to the User menu in the bottom of the sidebar, select your user account (email is shown) and then Manage account. Here you will see what plan you are currently on, and can choose to upgrade to another plan by clicking the "Upgrade" button. You will then see a plan comparison of the prices and plan features.

Choose the plan you want to upgrade to, and confirm in the checkout modal.

How do I change my subscription between monthly and annual billing?

You can switch between monthly and annual subscription using the "Change to monthly/yearly" button.

  • If you are on a trial, you can switch between monthly and yearly subscriptions, and the change will kick in once the trial ends.
  • If you started a monthly subscription already and want to switch to yearly, the new billing type will kick in at the end of the monthly period.
  • If you started a yearly subscription already and want to switch to monthly, the new billing type will only kick in at the end of the yearly period.

How can I cancel my plan?

To cancel your subscription, go to Manage your account, then look at the Plan section and select Cancel plan. On the Stripe page, you can cancel the plan there.

Once you've cancelled, it will go into effect during the next billing period.

What is Tana Outliner's cancellation and refund policy?

Refund policy. Tana Outliner provides refunds for your plan if canceled and requested within 48 hours of the invoice date. To request a refund, submit a request to our support team (email help@tana.inc, or contact via in-app bug reporting) and include the email address associated with your Tana Outliner account in your request.

Subscription cancellations. If you cancel or downgrade your plan partway through the billing cycle, your subscription will remain active until the end of your current billing period. Cancellations are not prorated, meaning you will retain access until your billing cycle ends, but no partial refunds will be issued.

If you upgrade your plan (for example, from Plus to Pro), the change will take effect immediately, and proration will be applied for the unused time on your previous plan. If you downgrade to a lower-tier or free plan, the change will take effect at the end of your current billing cycle, with no proration.

Where can I find my invoices?

Log in to Tana Outliner and go to Settings > Manage account > View invoices and payment history. This launches Stripe. In Stripe, scroll down to Invoice history. Each date is a link you can open to see the invoice for payments made.

How can I add the Tax ID (TRN/VAT/GST) to my billing information?

In jurisdictions where Tana is required to file VAT/GST (currently EU and Australia) we will be alerted if we detect an invalid tax ID on your account. As a result, we may reach out to have you update it.

To update it:

  1. In Tana Outliner, click on Manage your account, then scroll down and click on "View subscription details."
  2. On the Stripe page that opens, click "Update information."
  3. Scroll down and add your correct tax ID type by selecting your country or jurisdiction.
  4. Hit Save and you're good to go.

How can I check how many credits I have?

You can see how many credits you have left by clicking the user icon, then selecting Account settings. Here you'll also see when your quota renews. Credits will not roll over.

In the mobile apps, you can go to Settings and see how many credits you have left.

If you want to see details on how many AI credits are used, you can do Cmd/Ctrl+K > Open GPT log monitor.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer a 50% discount on our plans for students, academics, and NGOs:

  • Tana Outliner Plus: $5/month or $48/year ($4/month when paid annually)
  • Tana Outliner Pro: $9/month or $84/year ($7/month when paid annually)

To apply for the discount, send an email to help@tana.inc or student@tana.inc with proof of eligibility (for example, send from your verified .edu address or send a photo of your student ID).

How do I get the Tana Outliner student discount?

To apply for a student discount, send an email to student@tana.inc with proof of eligibility (for example, send from your verified .edu address or send a photo of your student ID). Also include your Tana Outliner account email and which plan you'd like:

  • Tana Outliner Plus: $5/month or $48/year ($4/month when paid annually)
  • Tana Outliner Pro: $9/month or $84/year ($7/month when paid annually)

It's important to specify if you'd like the monthly or annual plan.

Can existing subscribers switch to the new student plan?

Yes! If you qualify, email student@tana.inc with proof of eligibility (your school email or student ID). Please also include which plan you want and your Tana Outliner account email.

  • Tana Outliner Plus: $5/month or $48/year ($4/month when paid annually)
  • Tana Outliner Pro: $9/month or $84/year ($7/month when paid annually)

Depending on your current plan and eligibility, we will update your subscription based on the following:

  • Monthly subscribers: We'll switch you to the student plan at the end of your current billing cycle.
  • Annual subscribers: You'll also be switched to the student plan at the end of your current billing cycle. As an added bonus, you'll receive AI credits equal to 2x the cost difference between what's remaining on your current plan and the student plan.

I work in academia. Do I qualify for the student discount?

Yes. Email student@tana.inc with one of the following:

  • A message from your verified institutional email (for example, .edu or your university's domain), or
  • A photo of your current student or academic ID.

I'm a student who loves Tana Outliner, how can I get more involved?

First of all, join our 26K strong Community on Slack to share tips, learnings, and help others.

We're also launching a Tana Outliner Student Ambassador Program for the 2025/26 school year. If you'd like to get involved, email student@tana.inc with a bit about yourself and your ideas.

What happens when I graduate or leave my school?

Your student discount is valid for 12 months at a time. We'll re-verify your status (usually with your school email or proof of enrollment). If we can't verify it anymore, your discount will continue until the end of your current billing cycle, and then your workspace will switch to regular pricing unless you provide updated student info.

Is it allowed to use transcription services to record lectures at universities and schools?

The general policy for transcribing lectures at most academic institutions is that recording or transcribing lectures is permitted primarily for personal, educational use, however we recommend checking with your institution. A good rule of thumb is to always obtain consent before recording and transcribing others.

Do you offer login options other than Google and Apple ID?

While we are in closed beta we are only offering Google and Apple ID logins. More options will be added in the future when we are ready to launch to the general public.

How do I delete my account?

If you want a fresh start in Tana Outliner, we recommend resetting your primary workspace instead of deleting your account.

If you go through the steps for deleting your account, your account will be queued for deletion. You won't have access to the app anymore after this, and will not be able to re-register with the same email without contacting the support team on hey@tana.inc.

If you no longer want to use Tana Outliner, you can delete your account by:

  1. Click on the user icon in the top right corner
  2. Click Manage account
  3. Scroll to the bottom
  4. Select "Delete my account"
  5. Confirm by following the instructions

When will Tana Outliner start charging users?

Tana Outliner launched paid plans in May 2024. For more details, see Pricing.
